Songs of the Week

A friend sugguested I put samples of the "weird" music that I listen to up on my site (direct quote, spelling and all: " hehehe, those songs are wierd, good, but bizzar, you have a very odd taste in music, which is good too, its not bad, just wierd") and I thought it might be fun- that way people get to hear new stuff and the bands that I put up might gain some more fans.  I usually have it divided up into 6 categories: Classic Rock, Indie, Alternative Rock, "Oldies", Folk and Other. Other just contains music that doesnt fit anywhere else currently, but I think people should look into it.  But, right now I'm going to have them all be variuos Indie genres- have fun!

New Pyschedelia

"Sugarblaster" by Starlight Mints
Gosh, they guys are great. The Starlight Mints (one of 2 bands on See-thru records, the other being Enon, whom which I dont really care for...) have a light, fun, rather pop-ish sound that just makes you happy.   The lyrics are out there... sorta "trippy" if you will. One of my favourite Indie rock bands. When I bought there CD it also came with a single called "Popsickle" which had a video.. I love! It has this really cool muppet rockin' out. He looks like he is stoned... but its really funny.

"Boy with the Arab Strap" by Belle and Sebastian
The first time I listeded to Belle and Sebastian (Scotland) I knew I would end up falling in love with them (aww!).  They are just so mellow and soothing- yet very very happy.  If you like people like Simon and Garfunkel (or, god forgive you, Peter Paul and Mary) from the '60's then you will really like B&S.  Hey, I mean my sister loves them. And she knits.

"Satisfaction (I can't get no)" cover by Cat Power
I know, I know, its originally a stones song. And dont judge simply because I chose a cover song to represent Cat Power. She has a lot of great songs that she wrote herself- "Nude as News", being one of them.  But, she has a record out called "the covers album" which (you guessed it!) covers!  Jut like that one Mr. Rogers eipsode... Anyway, she covers the greats- the Velvet Underground, Dylan, Neil Young, Smog... etc... She adds a great twist to it, in her mellow sad sort of way... great stuff

Indie Pop

"Oh Yoko!" by John Lennon
This song is so great, it really describes the love he had for his wife.   Now I know, Yoko isn't a  favourite of many people, but iI mean, if you are a Lennon fan, you have to just deal with it. So, no bitching about her, and thinking because its about her it going to be bad. Cause its not.  "Oh Yoko, my love will turn you on! In a middle of a dream, in the middle of a dream, I call your name. Oh Yoko!"  Its very sweet, and of course, really good.

"Tiny Citie Made of Ashes" by Modest Mouse
Again, technically not independent anymore, but I have become really into this song.  Its just soo weird.  And of course, its lyrically really good.  Very exestenialist- but good.   "I'm gonna get dressed up in plastic gonna shake hands with the masses. Oh no! Does anybody know a way that a body could get away? Does anybody know a way?"  Oh oh oh. So good.

"Swedish Fish" by Veruca Salt
This song makes me chuckle.  I'm sure it has some deeper meaning, and I'm sure I could figure out whats going on, but, nonetheless, its about Swedish Fish.  And, growing up, that was one of my favourite candies.  "Green is the best of all the flavours"  Actually, I prefer red, but still... gotta love those women rockers...
